New to Childcare Courses

If you are new to childcare or have never worked with in the early education field for children 0 - 5 years, the courses below is what you will need to get started (you will still need additional training to meet annual training requirements):

Experienced in Childcare Required Courses

If you have experience in childcare and/or the early childhood education field for children 0 - 5 years, these are some of the required and recommended courses that you may need (additional classes may be required to meet your annual training hours requirement):

New to Childcare Business Courses

Note: This section is for individuals and companies who are about to open their childcare business. Whether you are trying to become a registered or licensed home or open a child care center, we can provide you with step-by-step assistance, training, and on-going services once your business is open.

Starting a Home-based business - This course is for those individuals who want to start their childcare business in their home. A step-by-step guide is provided to participants regarding obtaining the license. Information regarding training requirements, records to keep, marketing, etc., is also discussed. This course may be taken in a group or you may schedule the class for a one-on-one session. This course is approximately 2 hours.

Starting a Center-based childcare business - This course is for those individuals who want to open a childcare center. A step-by-step guide is provided to participants regarding obtaining the license. Information regarding training requirements, staffing requirements, records to keep, marketing, etc., is also discussed. This course may be taken in a group or you may schedule the class for a one-on-one session. This course is approximately 2 hours.

How to start a quality business in Childcare - This course is for those individuals who have not yet decided which type of childcare license they want or the difference between a home or center based business and would like general information regarding starting a childcare business. This course may be taken in a group or you may schedule the class for a one-on-one session. This course is about 4 hours long. Topics include: * type of childcare programs that are available; * determining the needs for childcare; * overview of why you want to do childcare as a profession; * business planning; * funding issues; and * management issues. This course is offered on the first Thursday of each month.

Practitioner Trainings

PLEASE NOTE: ALTHOUGH THESE COURSES ARE DESIGNED FOR NEW PRACTIONERS, EMPLOYEES, TEACHERS, ETC., DIRECTORS AND ADMINISTRATORS MAY ALSO TAKE THESE COURSES TO OBTAIN UPDATED AND/OR NEW INFORMATION THAT MAY BE PROVIDED OR TO ASSIST IN THEIR CKA TRAINING.

Pre-Service Training - This is a basic level course. This course is designed to meet the requirements of licensing in the area of developmental stages of children, fostering children's self-esteem, constructive guidance and discipline of children, strategies and techniques for monitoring and working with children, age-appropriate activities for chldren, reporting child abuse, neglect, exploitation, and sexual abuse, emergency preparedness, violatile persons, severe injury and/or illnesses of a child or adult, preventing the spread of communicable diseases and locating and using fire extinguishers and first aid equipment. Shaken Baby Syndrome, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and Early Childhood Brain Development are also included. Required for new staff members. DOES NOT include CPR/First Aid Certification . The course is approximately 8 hours long. Can be broken up into 2 sessions. (Minimum Standards Handbook optional). CKA: ALL AREAS

Parent Handbook Overview - This is a basic level course and covers the minimum standards requirement by licensing. This course is included in the CDA Program. This training is 1 hour long. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) - This is a basic level course but can be adapted to intermediate and advance levels. This course is designed to inform the provider of the seriousness of SIDS and the precautions that the provider is required to take. (required course by CCL). This training by itself is 1 hour. The 15 minute session is added to minimum standards overview training and the 30 minute training is added to some of our marathon training sessions. Shaken Baby Syndrome -  This is a basic level course but can be adapted to intermediate and advance levels. This course is designed to inform the provider about the causes, how the provider should respond, recognizing shaken baby syndrome, and how to prevent shaken baby syndrome. This training by itself is 1 hour. Early Brain Development - This is a basic level course but can be adapted to intermediate and advance levels. This course informs the provider on the current research regarding infant brain development, why attachment is so important during the early years (Birth to 12 months), various ways to develop language, hand and eye coordination, motor skills and discusses why quality of care is so important. This course is 1 hour long by itself. The Joy of Potty Training - This is a basic level course. This course is designed to assist providers and parents in potty training children. The course is 1 hour long. CKA: Child Growth & Delopment; Observation & Assessment; Family & Community Relationships.

Required Postings Training - This is basic level course, but can be adapted to intermediate and advance levels. This course is designed to place focus on ensuring that providers identify the postings that must be in plain view for their clients and the requirements in keeping those postings updated. This course is included in the CDA Program and meets the requirements for CDA renewals. This course is 1 hour long. (Minimum Standards Hanbook Required). Child abuse Prevention, Identification and Reporting - This is a basic level course. Participants will learn about what child abuse prevention, identification and reporting are and about the importance of prevention, identification and reporting in protecting the welfare of young childrfen,. Participants will be instructed on when andhow to report, as well as on how to deal with the sensitive issues that arise when dealing with possible child abuse in families they serve. The course is approximately 1 hour long but can be adapted to 2 hours. CKA: Health & Safety.

Administrator Trainings

Emergency Medical Plans - This is an advanced level course. This course is designed to assist providers who have children with special needs.  Whether those needs be something as simple as changing their diet or something more severe as asthma, the provider must always be prepared to respond quickly. The course is 1 hour long. Enrollment Packets! What must I have!?! - This is an advanced level course and is designed to assist providers in ensuring they have included all the necessary requirements of licensing prior to the child's first day.  It also touches on additional forms that may be required depending on the child (e.g., special needs, hours of care, etc.). This course is 1:30 hours long. (Providers must bring their current enrollment packets). This course may be used to renew the CDA Program. Trimming Down Deficiencies - This is an advanced level course. This course gives an overview of the most cited deficiencies.  It also gives practical suggestions that assists the provider in lowering their chances of being cited for these deficiencies and increase the quality of their business. This course is 1:30 hours long. Parent Handbook, are you covered? - This is an advanced level course and covers what is required by licensing and then gives suggestions on what the provider may want to include. This course is designed to help providers identify areas of concern in their own operational handbook as it relates to legal issues. This course may be used to renew the CDA Program. This training is 2 hours long. (Minimum Standards Handbook Required). Contracts Galor! - This is an advanced level course and is designed to assist the provider in contract development.  It gives a very indepth view of what is not only required to make the contract workable, but also what the provider may want to include or not include to make it stand the test of a law suit. This course is 2 hours long. (Providers must bring their current contract(s) to this training). This course may be used to renew the CDA Program. Making Healthier Choices & Staying Active - This is an advanced level course. This course is a half-day training designed to teach providers how to implement healthier choices and daily physical activity into their programs. This training is 4 hours long. This course may be used to renew the CDA Program. CKA: Health & Safety; Healthy & Safe Environment; Implementing a Developmentally Appropriate Curriculum.

Identifying & Reporting Child Abuse - This course is an intermediate and advanced level course. This course is designed to teach providers how to recognize the signs and symptoms of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, as well as how to identify signs of neglect. This course will also instruct providers when and how they should report suspected child abuse. This training is 2 hours long. CKA: Professionalism (Business); Maintaining an Effective Organization; Healthy & Safe Environment; Professional Practice, Methods & Curriculum; Health & Safety. 

Child Sexual Abuse - This course is an advanced level course. This course is designed to teach providers how to recognize the signs and symptoms of sexual abuse as well as how to handle a child who cries out to them. This training is 3 hours long. This course may be used to renew the CDA Program. This training also covers the course material for Pride/Mini-Pride session 7 for foster & adoptive parents. Discipline - This course is an advanced level course. This course is designed to teach providers how to assist children in controlling their feelings of frustration, anger, etc., in more positive ways. This training is 3 hours long. This course may be used to renew the CDA Program. This training also covers the course material for Pride/Mini-Pride session 6 for foster & adoptive parents.  CKA: Guidance; Healthy & Safe Environment

Difficult Developmental Phases in Babies & Children - This is an advanced level course. This course is designed to assist providers in dealing with normal developmental phases in babies and children that includes crying spells, separation anxiety, exploratory behaviors, normal negativism, normal poor appetite, and toilet training resistance. The course is 2 hours long. This course may be used to renew the CDA Program. CKA: Health & Safety; Professional Practicem Methods & Curriculum; Healthy & Safe Environment.

Children with Disabilities and other Special Needs - This training is aimed at assisting providers in identifying the needs of children with disabilities and/or other special needs. The training assist providers in identifying community resources that may be available to assist and support ECE providers and their families. The training is appropriate for all levels and is approximately 2 hours long. CKA: Child Growth & Development; Health & Safety; Professional Practice, Methods & Curriculum; Guidance; Family & Community Relationships; Diversity; Observation & Assessment; Healthy & Safe Environment; Implementing a Developmentally Appropriate Curriculum; Instituting Family-Centered Programming.

Registered/Licensed Homes

Please Note: This is a new section that is geared towards special topics for Registered and/or Licensed Home Providers. However, anyone may take these classes.

Cost-effective Shopping - This class is designed to assist participants with evaluating food costs to meet their budgets. Providers will be able to apply principles of cost-effective shopping and determine the type of purchasing needed for their program. This class is approximately 1 hour long. CKA: Financial Management.

Family Style Meals - This training will encourage participants to serve family style meals in their family/home child care setting. Participants will be able to identify the four components of family-style meals; describe the advantages of family-style meals; and state how family-style meals could be incorporated into their programs. This class is approximately 1 hour but can be adapted to 2 hours. CKA: Family and community relationships; Implementing family centered programming.

Food Intolerances and Allergies - This course is designed to discuss common food allergies/intolerances in children. Participants will learn to read labels for allergens and learn how to identify sources of information on common allergies and food intolerances. Successful participants will be able to differentiate between a food intolerance and a food allergy; describe symptoms and consequences of a severe food allergy, and identify hidden food allergens from food labels. This course is approximately 1 hour but can be adapted to 2 hours. CKA: Health & Safety.

Food Safety in Child Care - This course is designed to give participants training in managing food items in the safest way possible during food storage and preparation. Participants will learn practical ideas to keep food safe during storage and preparation, and identify food safety strategies to be used in the child care facility. This course is approximately 1 hour and can be adapted to 2 hours. CKA: Health & Safety.

Food Safety at the Grocery Store - This course is designed to give participants training in managing food items while making their purchases at the grocery store. Participants will learn about foodborne illnesses, the common pathogens that causes foodborne illnesses, signs and symptoms of foodborne illnesses, and how to prevent foodborne illnesses while making their food purchases. This course is approximately 1 hour and can be adapted to 2 hours. CKA: Maintaining a Healthy Environment.

Minimum Standards Overview - This is a basic level course but can be adapted for intermediate and advance levels. This training gives an overview of the minimum standards manual for home care providers and centers.  The course is designed to help the provider better understand the manual as it applies to their specific license requirements. This training includes a 15 minute segment on SIDS. This course is included in pre-service training and some marathon training sessions. This training is 2 hours long. This course assist the provider in understanding their legal requirement to include children with special needs and/or disabilities in their program.  This course addresses ways to include clients with special needs as well as how to legally exclude children based on legal guidelines. The course is 2 hours long. This course may be used to renew the CDA Program. Keeping your Records in Order - This course is designed for all levels (basic, intermediate, advance). This course focuses on what providers must have in their clients and personnel folders.  It also addresses the requirements for registered/licensed homes in regards to family members. This course is included in the CDA Program and meets the requirements for CDA renewals. This training is 2 hours long. (Minimum Standards Handbook Required). Operational Policies - This course covers all levels (basic, intermediate, advanced). This course is designed to place focus on creating, updating, editing, etc., your policies and policies and procedures handbook for employees. This course is 2 hours long. (Provider must bring their current Parent Handbook & Operational Policies). This course may be used to renew the CDA Program. Specialized Forms - This course is for all levels (basic, intermediate, advanced). This training is designed to place focus on helping the provider identify the various forms they may need (that are not provided by licensing) as it relates to their own situation or clients. This training is 2 hours long. This course may be used to renew the CDA Program. Stages of Child Development - This course is for all levels (basic, intermediate, advanced). This course informs the provider on the current research regarding childen's brain development, why attachment is so important during the early years (13 months to ã years), various ways to develop language, hand and eye coordination, motor skills and discusses why quality of care is so important. Effective Communication - This coursei s for all levels (basic, intermediate, advanced). This course is designed to assist providers in creating positive and healthy communications with the parents of the children they serve. This course addresses how to communicate expectations to the parents, ensuring that contact information is provided, how to arrange special meetings, how to keep the lines of communication open, how to listen to the parents, how to provide information to the parents in the form of training or educational materials, how to be clear, creative and honest with the parents, how to address potential problems and keeping a positive outlook. This is 2 hours long. This course may be used for the CDA Program as well as renewal of the CDA. Bloodborne Pathogens - This course is for all levels (basic, intermediate, advanced). This course is required by CCL. The course covers the definition of bloodborne pathogens and how they are transmitted. Also included in the training is HIV, Hepatitis B & C, how to prevent transmission, exposure and proper hygiene (includes student workbook). This course is 1:30 - 2 hours. CKA: Health & Safety; Healthy & Safe Environment

Transportation Safety - This course is for all levels (basic, intermediate, advanced). This course is required by CCL by current staff by December 31, 2009 and all new staff prior to transporting children. The training will cover minimum standards for transportation and field trips, supervion of children, child passenger safety seat information, safety in and around vehicles, school zones, and railroad crossing, parking and backing procedures, unloading and double-checking vehicles after unloading, and specific vehicle safety training (i.e., busses, passenger vans, etc.). Developing a Continuity of Operations (COOP) Plan for Child Care Providers - This course is for all levels (basic, intermediate, advanced). The main objective of this course is to assist providers in thinking ahead and making plans for continuing services or re-opening their businesses after an emergency (i.e., Hurricane, Flu Epidemic, etc.). The course covers all levels. The course is 2 hours long. Lifting the lid on Child Care Worker Wages - This training is a very interactive training. This training is very appropriate for mixed audiences (providers, parents, CPA's, etc) at all levels. The course is 1:30 hours long (but can be longer depending on class size. Since participation is require from at least 5 audience members, the class size minimum is 10.  CKA: Family & Community Relationships; Maintaining an Effective Organization; Financial Management; Healthy & Safe Environment; Health & Safety; Instituting Family-Centered Programming

Families and Divorce - This course is for all levels (basic, intermediate, advanced). Teachers can be an important source of support for children experiencing difficult family transistions. Research has shown that relationships with supportive adults can buffer children with whom they work. Teachers and other professionals need to have an understanding of how divorce affects children and the family changes that occur as part of the divorce process. Providers need to keep in mind that with many transistions, behaviors in children can change. Providers also need to have a clear policy regarding how staff should deal with divorcing parents as well as resources that may be available to those families who are experiencing divorce. This training is approximately 2 hours long and can be adapted to 4 or 6 hours. CKA: Child Growth & Development; Professionalism (Business) .
